BRETT DEAN: “WATER MUSIC"

conductors: Brett Dean and H K Gruber
Sharon Bezaly (flute) and the Rascher Saxophone Quartet
BIS-CD-1576

A further new recording by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra has just been released featuring a collection of music by Australian composer Brett Dean. This album represents Dean´s most important works for chamber orchestra - including "Carlo" (1997) - the work which brought him international attention and "Water Music" (2004) which was composed for the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. With H K Gruber conducting this brings together several strands of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra´s artistic ambitions over the next years which includes a closer collaboration with both Brett Dean and H K Gruber who has been the ensemble´s artist in residence since 1999.

Brett Dean began composing in 1988, initially working on experimental film and radio projects and as an improvising performer, whilst he was also a full time viola player with the Berlin Philharmonic. He returned to Australia in 2000 to concentrate on his growing compositional activities and is now one of the most internationally performed composers of his generation.  He has been commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Proms and Lucerne Festival, among others. He was awared the prestigious Gawemeyer Award for Music Composition earlier this year. He is currently working on an operatic adaptation of Peter Carey´s Bliss for Opera Australia which will be premiered in 2010.
